Fincan is an iOS app that uses artificial intelligence to analyse photos of Turkish coffee cups, detecting more than 250 symbols and delivering personalised readings. Combining computer vision and natural language processing (NLP), Fincan brings the centuries-old tradition of tasseography (kahve falı) into the digital age. Released in 2025, the app is available in seven languages: Turkish, English, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Arabic and German. Turkish coffee culture and tradition was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.

Derived from Classical Persian "pingān" (bowl, cup), the word travelled through Arabic "finjān" (فنجان) into Ottoman Turkish, and from there spread across Ottoman cultural geography to the Balkans.

Turkish coffee cup reading (kahve falı), known in English as tasseography or tasseomancy, is the practice of interpreting patterns in the coffee grounds left at the bottom of a cup. Coffee reached the Ottoman court in the mid-16th century and the first Istanbul coffeehouse opened in 1554-1555 in Tahtakale. The tradition is still practised today across Türkiye, the Balkans, Greece, Cyprus, the Middle East and parts of the Caucasus.

Fincan brings this rich heritage into the 21st century with the power of AI. Turkish coffee culture and tradition was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.
